Making a timeline inside Word with SmartArt

  1. Go to Insert → SmartArt.
  2. Choose Process, then Basic Timeline (or Circle Accent Timeline) and press OK.
  3. Open the text pane and type one bullet per event: the date, then a short label.
  4. Use SmartArt Design to change colours and style.

SmartArt spaces every item evenly, so a gap of ten years looks the same as a gap of ten days, and it has no idea of durations. When the spacing should mean something, build it here and paste the image.

Word timeline questions

Does Word have a timeline template?

Word has no dedicated timeline tool, but SmartArt (Insert → SmartArt → Process) includes Basic Timeline and Circle Accent Timeline layouts, and Microsoft publishes downloadable timeline templates. They space items evenly rather than by date.

How do I put this timeline into a Word document?

Use Export & share → Copy as image and paste into Word. If your browser blocks image copying, export a PNG and use Insert → Pictures → This Device.

Can I edit the timeline after it is in Word?

The pasted picture is not editable in Word, but your timeline is saved in this browser. Change it here and paste the new version. For editable shapes, export to PowerPoint and copy the shapes from the slide into Word.

How do I make a vertical timeline for a Word page?

Switch the layout to Vertical before copying. Vertical fits a portrait page well and leaves room for notes under each event.
