Using Google Slides’ built-in timeline diagrams

  1. Open a slide and go to Insert → Diagram.
  2. Choose Timeline in the side panel.
  3. Pick the number of dates and a colour, then click a layout to insert it.
  4. Click into each placeholder to type your dates and labels.

The built-in diagrams have a fixed number of evenly spaced slots, so they cannot show real gaps between dates, durations or BC dates. Build the timeline here when spacing matters, then import it.

Google Slides timeline questions

Does Google Slides have a timeline template?

Yes, in a basic form: Insert → Diagram → Timeline adds an evenly spaced timeline you can fill in. For a timeline with real spacing between dates, build it here and import it as a .pptx.

How do I import the timeline into Google Slides?

Export & share → PowerPoint downloads a .pptx. In Google Slides choose File → Import slides → Upload, select the file, tick the slide and press Import slides.

Will the shapes stay editable in Google Slides?

Yes. The export is built from native lines, shapes and text boxes, so you can recolour, move and retype them in Slides.

How many events fit on one slide?

Five to nine stay readable from the back of a room. For more, split the story across two slides or put the full version in a PDF handout.
